Chapter 5
To pursue a career in music
Chris realized that he would have to move to London
So in 1996, he enrolled at University College London and studied history
That's where he met future band members
Will, John and Guy
Most of our friends, people said (?)
Same mates, same mates they always said
Yeah... [laughters]
I don't think it's all uncommon
For bands to originate at school
Because like America and Great Britain alike
This happens all the time
Because I think especially a university
Because for the first time
You're completely surrounded by people
The alike minded, their searching for similar things
You know, you've got other talent and musicians around you
But yet you're completely secured in the face
In a sense that you're on campus or whatever
You've got some source of support from family
But yet you're on your own for the first time
The four of them were all housed in the same building
Although they were studying very different subject
They all shared a passion for music
And London gave them the perfect playing ground
To see what other bands were out there
Whenever possible
They were going to gigs
I can understand why Chris Martin went to London to form the band
Because (?) companies are there, record companies are there
All the big bands play there
You know, if you wanna see any band that you like
It's always better to go off and see it in London
Because no in doubt that they'll always be on tour
They were always gonna threw this
It was always a good idea to go out there
Plus, the fact you got people living there
You wanna be in bands and wanna make it big
London's like this perfect setting
For the music industry to really, you know, explode
Because you've got such a diversity, you know
Diversity of culture
It's like the culture of center for the world, you know
There's so much going on
If you wanna go to Reggae gate, you go to Reggae gate
If you wanna go to like a guitar base gate
You go to that
You can go to whatever kind of music you wanna go to
London's a great place for music
Probably the capital city of music
No matter what style that you're into
Be Punk, Goth, Indie, Rock
There's always clubs and places to play
There's all those venues and market, the stores, and the (?)
Also lots of pubs, have nice bands playing
It's at these where you can meet people
Or often into forming bands as well
When they were not studying
They would go to watch bands
Guy and John would hang out in Chris's room
And together they would write songs
A lot of the material that would end up on the band's first album
Came together here
They wrote hundreds of songs
Before finally picking with tracks
Which would become world-wide hits
To sit down with a group of peple, like
If you intended to go out and, like
Join a band and have a successful career within that band
I mean, starting from a point where you'll just sort of sit down
And have a jam with someone
I think it's more than important, it's vital
Which is why so many bands successful that come out of university
Because they've had the opportunity in a time
To just sit down together, relax, have a smoke, you know
Just sit and jam
And just pick each other's brains
And I think when you do that
And you get yourself in that sort of situation
The more you just sort of work with it and it just evolves
